Ancestral chart research

What is a ancestral chart?

When we start finding out all the ancestors of yourself or another person, we call it an ancestral chart. We start with the person whose ancestral chart you are making, the ancestor or proband(us). Then we note the parents, their parents, all the grandparents, great-great-grandparents, and on and on until you get no further. With each generation back in time, the number of ancestors in the chart doubles.
Of all ancestors, we try to include, as completely as possible, all primary data such as: birth-, marriage-, and death dates.

In ancestral charts, the “system-Kekule” is used. The “proband” is given number 1 and his or her father and mother number 2 and 3 respectively. The father's parents are numbered 4 and 5, the mother's 6 and 7. Men always have an even number (except the male proband), women an odd number. Quaternity numbers are easy to calculate based on the number of the child (k): the father has as number kx2, the mother (kx2)+1. If the child has number 231 then his father has number 462 and his mother 463.
